Davis Reveals an Early Raider Depth Chart at Quarterback--It’s Hilger, Then Plunkett
Have the Raiders changed No. 1 quarterbacks and announced it early?
Owner Al Davis, asked at a Tuesday Super Bowl function who would be the team’s quarterback, told the San Francisco Examiner’s Art Spander: “Rusty Hilger . . . and Jim Plunkett.”
He didn’t mention Marc Wilson, who opened last season as the starter, then was replaced by Plunkett in the 11th game.
Hilger was eliminated from the so-called quarterback competition in the last week of training camp. Davis, however, has been high on him since drafting him as a little-known sixth-rounder from Oklahoma State in 1985.
There have been reports that Davis will try to trade for draft rights to Vinny Testaverde or for a veteran such as Neil Lomax. A Raider source said, however, that no trade talk has been heard internally in recent weeks, and Hilger is expected to get the promotion to No. 1.
