Estancia High School has become a contender in the Sea View League, as the Eagles held on to upset University High, 59-53, Wednesday night in the Trojans’ gym at Irvine.

The Eagles knocked off a rated team for the second time in less than a week. Friday night, they defeated Corona del Mar, and with the win they are alone on top of the league standings at 3-0 (9-8 overall).

“I’m very surprised with where we are in the league,” said Estancia Coach Joe Reid. “This team is jelling together, but tonight the difference was the way we shot against their zone in the first quarter.”

The Eagles jumped to an 18-6 first-period lead before the Trojans (2-1, 13-5) knew what hit them. They were led by the hot shooting of center Brian Tift, who had 8 points in the quarter and 14 overall.

University cut the lead to 40-36 midway through the third quarter when forward Steve Stolzoff hit a turnaround jump shot, but that was as close as the Trojans would come while playing without top guard Eric Olin, who was out with the flu.

Down the stretch, free-throw shooting became the difference, and Estancia sank 8 of 10 foul shots in the final quarter.

Eagle guard Kyle Mooney led all scorers with 20 points and had 8 assists, while Lasse Glassen had 19 points for the Trojans.

It was the fifth straight win for Estancia and snapped University’s four-game win streak.
