San Diego High School Basketball : Oceanside Wins 10th in 11 Games

Oceanside High School jumped to a 17-5 lead after the first quarter and went on to defeat El Camino, 67-52, for its 10th victory in its last 11 games.

Oceanside (4-0 in league, 10-6 overall) took first place in the Avocado League with the victory. El Camino dropped to 3-1 and 13-3.

Oceanside’s Junior Seau led all scorers with 24 points, and Darrell Noble added 13. Edmond Johnson’s 17 points paced El Camino, which could pull no closer than 14 points after the first quarter.

In other Avocado League action: Tom Lovette scored 23 points to lead Escondido (2-1, 5-7) to a 69-63 victory over Carlsbad (1-4, 4-10), and Mike Francis scored 10 points to lead San Marcos (2-3, 10-8) to a 41-36 victory over Ramona (2-2, 9-6).

PALOMAR LEAGUE

San Dieguito 52, Orange Glen 48--Chris Bahr scored 24 points and held Orange Glen center Steve Klinger, who averages 16 points, to just seven as San Dieguito improved to 4-0 and 10-5. Brian Leander scored 17 for Orange Glen (0-4, 4-13).

Torrey Pines 76, Fallbrook 57--Tom Underwood scored 22 points and Scot Thompson 21 to lead Torrey Pines (4-1, 14-4), which took a 40-18 lead at the half.

Mount Carmel 64, Vista 51--Chris Conrad scored eight of his nine points as host Mount Carmel broke open a close game with a 20-9 second-quarter spurt. Eric Olander led Mount Carmel (3-1, 12-3) with 13 points and Mike Wasserburger added 12. Mike Fleming led Vista (2-3, 7-9) with 12 points.

CITY EASTERN LEAGUE

Mira Mesa 56, Patrick Henry 53--Mike Eicher’s layup with two minutes remaining in the game put Mira Mesa ahead for good, 54-53, at Mira Mesa. Patrick Henry (1-1, 8-6) led, 15-2, at the start of the game, but Mira Mesa rallied to tie the score, 30-30, at the half. David Lee led Mira Mesa (1-1, 13-3) with 17 points. Patrick Henry was paced by Collis Hunt’s 14 points.

CITY WESTERN LEAGUE

Kearny 73, University City 56--Tim Garlin scored a game-high 23 points, mostly from the outside, to lead Kearny. John Williamson added 18 points for Kearny (2-0, 13-3), which has lost only to top-ranked Morse in its last 13 games. Allen Peller’s 22 points led University City (0-2, 4-6).

Clairemont 43, Mission Bay 41--Clairemont converted 9 of 13 free throws in the final quarter to hold off host Mission Bay. Clairemont (1-1, 11-4) was led by Ray McDavid’s 17 points. Dwain Smith’s nine points led Mission Bay (0-2, 5-7).

La Jolla 60, USDHS 49--La Jolla outscored University of San Diego High School, 14-4, in the second quarter for a 26-14 halftime lead at USDHS. Sophomore Adam Kleid led La Jolla (2-0, 11-4) with 22 points and Sean Rodgers added 15 points and 10 rebounds. James Wilson led USDHS (1-1, 4-9) with 14 points.

CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE

Christian 52, Hoover 50--Darrell White made two free throws with 43 seconds left as Christian overcame a 34-29 Hoover lead at Hoover. Doug Lake’s 15 points paced Christian (2-0, 12-4). Hoover (0-2, 5-12), which was outscored, 23-16, in the fourth quarter, was led by 14 points each from Michael Walker and John Roots.

Lincoln 85, St. Augustine 65--Ken Thompson and Aaron Wilhite each scored 14 points to lead Lincoln (2-0, 9-5) at home. Charlie Applegate paced St. Augustine (0-2, 8-5) with 22 points.

METRO CONFERENCE

Hilltop 58, Chula Vista 48--Bryan Brooker scored 24 points to lead Hilltop (3-3, 10-10) in an upset of Chula Vista (3-2, 11-7) on the road. Tony Hyner paced Chula Vista with 16 points.

GIRLS CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE

Crawford 61, San Diego 46--Carmella Hicks scored 24 points and Karla Salmi added 20 to lead Crawford (2-0, 14-1). Thelma Sanders led San Diego (1-1) with 21 points.
