Dana Kirk, former Memphis State basketball coach, has filed libel suits totaling $20 million against Sports Illustrated and the Memphis Commercial Appeal, saying that they incorrectly reported irregularities in his program and caused him to be fired last September.

Spokesmen for both publications said they would stand by their stories. The articles appeared after a federal grand jury had begun investigating reports of sports gambling in Tennessee.
