ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASKETBALL : Roundup : No. 2-Ranked Marina Still on Roll as It Beats Fountain Valley, 64-48

Marina High School continued to show its dominance in the Sunset League as the Vikings rolled over Fountain Valley, 64-48, Friday night at Marina.

The Vikings (5-0, 18-2), ranked second in the county, are the only undefeated team in the league.

Fountain Valley (3-2, 9-8) was in trouble the entire evening as the Vikings led by as many as 22 points (38-16) early in the third quarter. The Barons made one run and cut the lead to 10 with 5:24 remaining in the game, but that was as close as they got.

Center Mark Georgeson led all scorers with 18 points and had 12 rebounds, and his inside play down the stretch was the difference. He blocked five shots and kept the Barons shooting away from the basket.

The Barrons were 18 of 36 from the field and turned the ball over nine times.

The Vikings outrebounded Fountain Valley, 45-24, and did not allow the Barons any second shots.

“Tonight was an outstanding defensive effort,” Marina Coach Steve Popovich said. “We are getting better as a team, but for us to keep winning we need to keep working harder.”

Kevin Waite was Fountain Valley’s leading scorer with 13 points, 9 coming in the second half.

Marina’s defense was outstanding as it limited the Barons to 10 points in the first half, only 4 in the second quarter.

“We asserted ourselves defensively,” Popovich said. “We took them out of their game, and our rebounding was just outstanding.”

In other Sunset League games:

Edison 76, Huntington Beach 67--Mike Prince scored 20 points for the Chargers at Huntington Beach. The Oilers made four three-point baskets in the first quarter take a 27-15 lead, but the Chargers (2-3, 10-9) outscored Huntington Beach, 41-21, over the next two quarters.

Ocean View 80, Westminster 62--The Seahawks outscored the Lions, 27-16, in the third quarter and went on to win at Westminster. Mike Frohn led the Lions with 19 and Geoff Graves added 15. Chris Tower led Westminster with 15.

In the Century League:

Santa Ana 54, El Modena 52--Bobby Joyce blocked John Degree’s five-foot shot with four seconds left to help preserve the Saints’ victory at Santa Ana.

Joyce led Santa Ana with 15 points and 17 rebounds. Jeff Stewart added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Degree led the Vanguards with 16 points.

Foothill 79, Villa Park 59--The Knights broke open a close game by outscoring the Spartans, 23-13, in the third quarter. Greg Rieber of Foothill led all scorers with 28 points. Tom Bray led the Spartans with 15. Villa Park’s Chris Storck, who averages 15 points a game, was struck near the eye in the the first quarter and suffered a cut. He required stiches and was unable to return.

Canyon 58, Santa Ana Valley 56 (OT)--The Falcons missed a last second shot in overtime as the Comanches (3-1, 8-7) won at home.

David Jones scored 15 points and Dan Kauten scored 13 for Canyon. Kenny Phillips scored 15 for the Santa Ana Valley.

In the Empire League:

Katella 52, Pacifica 43--Senior forward Richard Lucas, who has been bothered by a sore ankle, scored only eight points, but the Knights (8-0, 17-2) were still able to overcome the Mariners at Katella.

Lucas scored only two points in the first half as Pacifica (1-7) took a 25-23 lead. But the Knights, led by senior Brett Smith who scored 11 points and senior John Sunu who socred 10, scored outscored Pacifica, 15-8, in the third quarter.

Esperanza 60, Cypress 57--Rob Nay Scored 18 points, Ross Harvey had 11 and Mike Kent added 10 as the Aztecs scored the upset at Esperanza. The Centurions’ Frantz Reyes led all scorers with 22 points.

Kennedy 66, El Dorado 62--Michael Keith scored 19 points and Wendell Lauderdale added 10 as the Fighting Irish rallied from a 14-point deficit in the third quarter to beat the Golden Hawks at Kennedy. Chris Facione led El Dorado with 22 and Mike Moore had 18.

Los Alamitos 84, Loara 53--Forward Doug Wadleigh scored 17 points and forward Moe Warner scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Griffins to an easy victory at Los Alamitos.

Guard Ryan Blossey added 13 points and 8 rebounds for Los Alamitos. Warner also had 10 steals to tie the Los Alamitos single-game record.

Forward Randy Buchanan scored 14 to lead the Saxons and guard Paul Plettinck added 13.

In the Pacific Coast League: Woodbridge 72, Orange 48--The Warriors were able to combine a solid pressure defense and a fast break for the first three quarters to take a 59-29 lead over the Panthers at home.

Junior forward Adam Keefe scored a game-high 24 points and had 15 rebounds in three quarters of play. Teammate Vince Bryan scored 18 points and had 7 rebounds. David Townsend scored 12 points for the Warriors (4-0, 15-4).

Rusty Olsen scored 15 points for the Panthers (0-4).

Trabuco Hills 56, Laguna Beach 42--John Welch scored 20 points and Gordon McNeill added 15 as the Mustangs (4-0, 15-2) won at Laguna Beach. Ted Colburn added 10 points for Trabuco Hills. The Mustangs made 16 of 21 free throws in the game, 10 of 13 in the fourth quarter. Scott Herdman led the Artists (2-2, 6-11) with 19 points. Dusty Grant added 14 points.

In girls’ basketball:

Newport Christian 22, California Lutheran 20--Danielle Everett scored 10 points to lead the Conquerors (2-4, 2-7) at Newport Christian.
