Long Beach’s Carter Wins USIU Golf Event

Wayne Carter of Cal State Long Beach shot 217 for 54 holes to win the United States International University Invitational golf tournament Tuesday at San Luis Rey Downs Country Club in Bonsall. Carter finished six strokes ahead of the tournament’s runner-up, teammate Dave Shankland. Long Beach won the team competition, finishing three strokes ahead of Cal.

Jim Wahl of USIU, who finished 11 strokes behind Carter at 228, was the top San Diego area golfer. San Diego State’s Demetrio Carasco and USIU’s Jeff Ward were tied for 16th at 230. SDSU finished sixth among 12 schools. USIU was seventh, University of San Diego was 10th and Point Loma Nazarene was 12th.
