Second-seeded Anders Jarryd of Sweden overcame serving problems Wednesday and defeated American Ken Flach, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, in the first round of the $105,000 New South Wales Open tennis championships in White City.

Jarryd needed almost three hours to win. In swirling cross winds, the Swede served 10 double faults, including 3 when serving for the match in the deciding set.

“I have to serve much better to go further in this tournament,” Jarryd said. “I couldn’t put in the first serve. It was as low as 25 or 30%, very bad for me. But I still think I can do well here.”

Flach, a member of the U.S. Davis Cup team and ranked 184th in the world, had qualified for the 32-man grass-court tournament. He pressured the Swede from the start but was unable to win the crucial points.

In another first-round match, 16-year-old Australian junior champion Jason Stoltenberg defeated New Zealand Davis Cupper Steve Guy, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6. Stoltenberg is next scheduled to play against top-seeded Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia in the second round.
