Kane Obtains Services of Agent in Arizona Despite Doubts He’ll Be Taken in NFL Draft

Mike Kane has an agent. Now all he needs is a contract offer for the agent to negotiate.

Kane, Cal State Northridge’s career rushing leader, has signed on with Professional Management Group of Tucson, Ariz. Neil Allen and Douglas Brenner of PMG will handle the Kane account--if there is one. Kane isn’t so sure that an agent contacting him means professional football teams will, too.

“I think they think I’ll get drafted,” Kane said of the agents, “but I don’t think I will. I think, I should be, but that’s just me talking.”

Kane was second in Division II rushing last season with 1,565 yards and 14 touchdowns on 274 carries. He is hoping he can sign as a free agent if he isn’t drafted. Kane has talked to a scout from Blesto Scouting, which represents the Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers and Houston Oilers, and he has filled out questionnaires for the Bills and Dallas Cowboys.

Northridge Coach Bob Burt said a scout from the Miami Dolphins was at CSUN last week watching films of Kane. “Mike is (Coach Don) Shula’s kind of guy. He’s a winner,” Burt said.

Burt said he has been contacted by several scouts who have said they like Kane as a late-round draft choice or free agent. The knock on the 5-10, 185-pounder is that he is not big enough or fast enough for the NFL. Burt disagrees, citing former professional players of similar stature.

“If someone doesn’t take him, they’re out of their minds,” Burt said. “He’s a Rob Carpenter, Rocky Bleier kind of guy. You have to give a guy with his credentials a chance to prove he can play at the pro level. If he can’t, fine. But if he can, you’ve got yourself a good player.”

The NFL draft is April 1. Said Kane: “I just know someone is going to call and say, ‘Hello, Mike? This is the Raiders . . .’ ”
