Orange County Prep Basketball : Estancia Rallies Past Newport Harbor, 48-42

Shawna Newbern and Dina Birch led a fourth-quarter rally Thursday that gave the Estancia High School girls’ basketball team a 48-42 victory over Newport Harbor in a Sea View League game at Estancia.

Newbern scored 6 of her game-high 16 points in the final period and Birch made five steals in the quarter as the Eagles (5-1, 12-7) overcame a 31-30 deficit.

Chantel Deford led Newport Harbor (2-4, 8-9) with 15 points.

Tustin 55, University 35--Tricia Andres scored 11 of her 15 points in the third quarter as the Tillers added to a 10-point halftime lead in a victory at Tustin. Andres also had seven steals. Melissa Hammond added 12 for the league-leading Tillers (6-0, 17-5). University is 3-3 in league.

In the Academy League:

California Lutheran 22, Newport Christian 14--Despite a game-high 12 points from the Danielle Everett, the Conquerors were defeated at Newport Christian.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 62, Bishop Montgomery 39--Kelly O’Brien scored 19 points and Hallie Formaneck 10 as the Monarchs (6-0, 17-5) won at Mater Dei.

In the Century League:

Santa Ana Valley 59, El Modena 57--Sharon Murrell’s clutch play led the Falcons past the Vanguards at El Modena.

Murrell’s layup with 30 seconds left gave Santa Ana Valley the lead for good at 58-57. She added a layup in the final seconds to clinch the victory.

The Falcons’ Susan Hatchett led all scorers with 29 points and Murrell added 16. Barbie Olson led El Modena with 23.

Villa Park 50, Santa Ana 32--Suzie Barnett scored 24 points to lead the Spartans (3-3, 6-13) over the Saints (0-6, 4-12) at Santa Ana. Lolly Figueroa and Tina Bruce each scored eight to lead Santa Ana.

Foothill 54, Canyon 37--Center Sue Davis scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds to lead the first-place Knights (6-0, 17-3) at Foothill. Najla Mitchell added 10 points for Foothill. Lori Iino led the Comanches (4-2, 11-7) with 10 points.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 60, Troy 31--Vicky Silva scored 26 points and Heidi Shikuma added 19 as the Indians won easily at Troy. Amber Hayden led the Warriors with 15.

Sunny Hills 48, Sonora 36--Catherine Stedman scored 17 points to lead the Lancers (3-3, 10-9) at Sunny Hills. Kim Ensing of the Raiders (0-6, 1-16) paced all scorers with 20.

La Habra 55, Buena Park 40--Robin Seabrook had 16 points as the Highlanders won at Buena Park. Kelly Hilliard of the Coyotes led all scorers with 18.

In the Empire League:

Kennedy 52, Cypress 51--Ursula Lovely drove the length of the court and made a 15-foot jump shot at the buzzer to give the Fighting Irish (8-2, 10-6) the victory at Cypress. Lovely had 36 points to lead all scorers and a game-high 21 rebounds and 5 assists. Diane Pohl scored 16 points for the Centurions.

In the Olympic League:

Ontario Christian 57, Orange Lutheran 40--Four Knights scored in double figures in their victory at Ontario. Orange Lutheran (0-8, 6-10) was led by Michelle Boltz with 11 points and Beverly Mueller with 10. Ontario Christian improved to 4-2, 9-5.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 61, Laguna Beach 32--Stephanie Swanson scored 28 points to lead the Mustangs (6-0, 16-6) past the Artists (2-4, 10-5) at Laguna Beach. Felicia Chalmers led Costa Mesa with 15.

Woodbridge 61, Trabuco Hills 36--Forward Gilly Powell scored 20 points and had 16 rebounds and guard Randee Mahony had 16 points and 8 steals to lead the Warriors (5-1, 15-7) at Trabuco Hills. The Mustangs are 1-5, 5-12.

In the South Coast League:

El Toro 58, Capistrano Valley 53 (OT)--Center Elaine Youngs scored 30 points, including six in overtime, to lead the Chargers.

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 57, Westminster 55--Tami Chick scored 22 points and Janet Perisho added 11 to lead the Oilers at Westminster.

The Lions’ Devon Akita led all scorers with 28 points, and Julie Johnston added 14. Westminster is 0-6 in league and 8-11.

In boys’ basketball:

Newport Christian 52, California Lutheran 34--Wayne Everett scored 13 points to lead Newport Christian.
