Sylmar High overcame a 14-point halftime deficit against Verdugo Hills on Wednesday to win its first game of the season, 40-33.

After trailing, 20-6, Sylmar took the lead with three minutes left on a short jumper by David Baker. The Spartans had only six players after three were declared academically ineligible earlier this week.

“We played with a lot of heart and desire in the second half,” Sylmar Coach Billy Reed said. “This was a game we felt going in we could win. At halftime, I said, ‘Listen, guys, this is it.’ ”

In the second half, Sylmar’s full-court press--led by guard Abraham Gonzalez--caused Verdugo Hills (6-8, 1-6) to make several turnovers. Forward Larry Legleigher had 19 of his career-high 21 points in the second half.

Baker added 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Gonzalez had three steals. John Wong had eight points for Verdugo Hills.

Sylmar (1-12 overall, 1-6 in East Valley League), which has not had a winning season since the school opened in 1961, may get a second victory if Poly has to forfeit an earlier game for using an ineligible player. But for Reed, there is nothing like earning one on the court.

“The kids are really excited,” said Reed, a first-year coach. “I’m so happy for them.”
