A public hearing on a plan to create a separate preferential parking district on several streets near UCLA will be held Friday by the City Council’s Transportation and Traffic Committee.

The new district would ban non-residential parking on parts of Westholme Avenue, Wyton Drive, Sunset Boulevard, Hilgard Avenue, Charing Cross Road, Comstock Avenue, Thayer Avenue, Edgeley Place, Dalehurst Avenue and Malcolm Avenue.

The city Transportation Department has proposed the district to free parking spaces for residents from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., peak attendance hours at UCLA.

Residents on those streets are now included in a preferential parking district that extends as far south as Wilshire Boulevard and as far east as Beverly Glen Boulevard.

Those living on Westholme and Wyton, in particular, have complained that even residents living on the outer edges of the district park their cars on the streets closest to UCLA when attending classes or visiting the campus.

The Holmby-Westwood Homeowners Assn. has endorsed the plan. Opposed to it are some residents living in the existing preferential parking district and the Metro Lobby, a student-funded group representing UCLA students.

The hearing will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Room 250A at City Hall.
