Orange County Girls Prep Basketball : Edison Clinches Sunset Title, 70-65

No. 1-ranked Edison High School clinched the Sunset League championship Thursday night by edging Fountain Valley, 70-65, at Fountain Valley.

The Chargers are 8-0, 23-1. The Barons are 2-6, 12-13.

Stacey Johnson led Edison with 26 points and 12 rebounds, Claudia Morris added 18 points and Christi Smith had 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Laurie Dehaven led Fountain Valley with 20 points and Melissa Handley had 16.

Marina 57, Westminster 36--Center Dawn Charroin had 20 points and 17 rebounds and forward Liberty Brewster had added 14 points as the Vikings (4-4, 13-10) easily beat the Lions (0-8, 11-11) at Marina.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 65, Pius X 41--The first-place Monarchs improved to 8-0, 19-5 by winning at Downey. Geri Ganey scored 16 points and Hallie Formaneck had 12 to lead Mater Dei. Pius X is 4-4, 11-9.

In the Century League:

Foothill 55, Santa Ana 25--The Knights built a 33-11 halftime lead and went on to win easily at Santa Ana. Sue Davis scored 16 points and Najla Mitchell 10 for first-place Foothill (8-0, 19-3). Trina Bruce led the Saints (0-8, 4-14) with 10.

Santa Ana Valley 37, Villa Park 35--Sharon Murrell made a short jump shot and a free throw in the final 30 seconds to give the Falcons (5-3, 11-6) the victory at Villa Park. Murrell led all scorers with 18 points.

In the Freeway League:

Buena Park 49, Troy 47--Cheryl Harada made three free throws in the final 40 seconds to give the Coyotes (3-5, 10-9) the victory at Troy. Harada led Buena Park with 17 points and Kelly Hilliard had 15. Susan Guest of Troy led all scorers with 25.

Fullerton 96, Sonora 31--Forward Vicki Silva had 29 points, guard Heidi Shikuma 26 and center Sabrina Welch 25 points and 18 rebounds to lead the first-place Indians (8-0, 13-6) at Fullerton. Lorrain Rudis led Sonora with 12.

In the Empire League:

Los Alamitos 57, Kennedy 40--Diane Sands and Jennifer Ensley each scored 15 as the Griffins won at Kennedy. May Reis added 13 for Los Alamitos. Kennedy’s Ursula Lovely led all scorers with 20.

Esperanza 64, El Dorado 29--Kerri Della Rosa had 16 points and Laura Jones 15 as the Aztecs (7-5, 13-9) routed the Golden Hawks at El Dorado. Julie Cooper of El Dorado led all scorers with 17 points.

Cypress 51, Pacifica 43--Pam Hass scored 10 points to pace the Centurions at Cypress.

In the Olympic League:

Valley Christian 71, Orange Lutheran 28--Donna Pollema had 25 points and Kari Parriott 22 as Valley Christian won at Orange Lutheran. Michelle Boltz led Orange Lutheran with 10. Valley Christian is 8-0, 18-2. Orange Lutheran is 0-10, 6-12.

In the Orange League:

Magnolia 58, Savanna 31--Dawne Borum scored 19 points and Rena Russell had 14 points, 7 steals, 6 assists and 4 blocked shots to lead the Sentinels at Savanna.

Brea-Olinda 77, Western 32--The Wildcats (7-0, 18-3) remained unbeaten in league by routing the Pioneers at Brea. Carrie Egan had 13 to lead Brea and Terri Winder had 12.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Woodbridge 52, Orange 45--Kathy Maillat made 5 free throws in 6 attempts in the fourth quarter and 9 of 12 in the game to help the Warriors (7-1, 17-3 ) win at Orange. Randee Mahoney made a three-point play with 40 seconds left to help clinch the victory for Woodbridge. Orange’s Suzette Sargeant led all scorers with 27.

Costa Mesa 81, Laguna Hills 33--Kim Nguyen had 17 points, Stephanie Swanson 16 and Meg Mitchell 12 as the Mustangs (7-1, 17-7) won at Costa Mesa. Wendy Hensel had 15 to lead the Hawks.

In the Sea View League:

Tustin 52, Corona del Mar 24--Tricia Andres had 15 points to lead the Tillers at Corona del Mar. Tustin is 8-0, 19-5. The 19 victories are the most in school history.

Newport Harbor 62, Saddleback 40--Chantel Deford scored 14 points to lead the Sailors (4-4, 10-9) at Newport Harbor.

University 25, Estancia 19--Shelley Davis made eight of her 10 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Trojans (4-4, 7-13) at University. Estancia’s Shawna Newbern was held to five points.
