Orange County Roundup : Titans Play Host to No. 4 Stanford

Two of the country’s top college baseball teams meet this weekend when Stanford visits Cal State Fullerton to start a three-game series tonight at 7 on Titan Field.

The teams also meet Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.

Stanford was ranked No. 4 and Fullerton No. 28 in a preseason poll.

Fullerton’s Mike Harkey, a junior right-hander who was a preseason All-American, pitches tonight.

Larry Casian, a senior left-hander, is expected to pitch Saturday, and Longo Garcia, a junior right-hander, is expected to pitch Sunday for Fullerton.

Stanford did not announce its pitching rotation for the weekend, but the Cardinal staff returns three starters--right-hander Jack McDowell (11-4 last season), Lee Plemel and Rob Wassenaar.

Ed Sneed, Steve Pate, Victor Regalado and Rod Curl are among the professionals who will play in the $40,000 Newport Classic Pro-Am Golf Tournament Saturday and Sunday at Newport Beach Country Club.

The 36-hole tournament, formerly the Crosby Southern, will match 74 professionals with 74 amateurs. The first tee-off is scheduled for 7:30 each day.

Three Orange County men--Rudy Dvorak of Laguna Beach, Steve Timmons of Newport Beach and Steve Friedman of Mission Viejo--are members of the U.S. men’s volleyball team that will play the Chinese national team in UC Irvine’s Bren Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The contest is part of a six-match series between the teams in the United States.

The U.S. team, which won the 1984 Olympic gold medal, is led by Karch Kiraly, a former UCLA player who is considered one of the world’s best players.

Tickets are available at the Bren Center box office and through Ticketron. Proceeds will benefit the UCI men’s volleyball team.

Wendy Turnbull, Zina Garrison, Barbara Jordan, Anne White and Peanut Louie Harper are among the professionals who will play in the Pringles Light Tennis Classic Saturday and Sunday at Disneyland Hotel Tennisland at Anaheim.

Celebrities Lloyd Bridges, Bert Parks, Dick Van Patten and Michael Warren also will compete in the tournament, which will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The San Juan Capistrano Championship Team Penning competition, Saturday and Sunday in the the Ortega Equestrian Center at San Juan Capistrano, is free to the public.

Teams of three horsemen will compete to divide and corral pre-assigned cattle from a herd of 30 in the shortest time. More than 120 teams participated last year. Competition begins at 8 a.m.

Area Notes The UC Irvine bicycling team begins its 1987 season Saturday at UCI. There will be four criterium events, beginning at 9 a.m., at Mesa Court. Teams from Stanford, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Cal State Fullerton and UC Santa Barbara are expected to compete
