Tennis Roundup : Connors Ousted in Quarterfinals
Ninth-seeded Milan Srejber upset second-seeded Jimmy Connors, 6-3, 7-6, Friday night to advance to the semifinal round of the $465,000 U.S. Indoor Pro tennis tournament at Philadelphia.
“It was the best I’ve played in my life,” said the 6-foot-8 Czech, who had 10 aces and 22 service winners.
“It was just boom, boom, boom,” Connors said.
In the final match of the day, fourth-seeded John McEnroe beat Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, 6-2, 6-3.
Earlier, fifth-seeded Tim Mayotte defeated 14th-seeded Paul Annacone, 7-5, 6-4.
Top-seeded Yannick Noah of France and second-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden won quarterfinals matches in a $175,000 Grand Prix tournament at Lyon, France.
Noah defeated Blaine Willenborg, 6-2, 6-3, and Nystrom downed Jerome Potier of France, 6-3, 6-4.
