Community College Baseball : Staton Has 8 RBIs as Orange Coast Wins, 18-1

Sophomore designated hitter Dave Staton hit two home runs and a double and tied a school record with eight RBIs as Orange Coast College defeated Antelope Valley, 18-1, Friday in the first round of the College of the Desert Tournament in Palm Desert.

Staton, who hit .403 last season and was voted to the all-state team, hit a two-run home run in the first inning and a three-run home run in the third.

His bases-loaded double in the fifth inning gave him eight RBIs, tying the record set by Kevin Reimer in 1983 against King’s River College.

Sophomore Ralph Ramirez was 3 for 6 for Orange Coast. Joey James, the state co-MVP last season, was 0 for 1, walked three times, and scored three runs.

Sophomore right-hander Jon Dishon gave up 1 run, 3 hits and struck out 12 in 8 innings to get the victory.

In other College of the Desert Tournament action:

Cypress 9, Chaffey 4--Sophomore shortstop Trevor Hoffman singled in two runs to start a five-run second inning for the Chargers. Cypress put the game away with three more runs in the fifth.

Eric Silvi pitched seven innings, gave up three runs, three hits and struck out five for the victory.

Paul Bunch was 4 for 4 with two RBIs and Rick Nen and Mike Faddol were 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs for Cypress.

In nonconference play:

Golden West 16, Palomar 6--The Rustlers scored four runs in the first inning and five in the second in the season opener for both teams at Huntington Beach.

Steve Watson, a freshman left-hander, relieved starter Rudy Taub with two on and nobody out in the fourth. He struck out 10, and gave up 2 hits and 1 run in the next six innings to get the victory.

Tom Smythe was 3 for 5, scored three runs and drove in two for Golden West.
