HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Burbank Earns Share of Foothill League Title, 71-58

Abo Velasco and Chris Buck each scored 19 points as Burbank High earned a tie with Schurr for its third straight Foothill League title with a 71-58 victory over Burroughs at Burbank.

Burbank (16-8, 7-3), which never trailed, held a 39-37 halftime lead and after three quarters, Burroughs trailed by only four, 53-49.

But in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs outscored Burroughs, 18-9, to secure the victory. Burroughs (2-8 in league) was led by Ian Grant with 15 points. Robbie Harris scored 14 and Tom Kelly had 12.

Bryan Chandler added 18 points for Burbank and Velasco had eight assists.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bell-Jeff 63, La Salle 51--Sheamus Martin had 18 points and 8 rebounds and Greg Dunn had 14 points and 7 rebounds for Bell-Jeff (13-10, 8-6) in a Santa Fe League game. Martin made 8 of 16 field-goal attempts and Dunn was 6 of 10 as Bell-Jeff shot 57%.

Nick Sanderson scored 10 points, Ron Brabant had nine points and six rebounds and Chris Dyer had seven assists for Bell-Jeff, which finished fourth in the league. La Salle (0-20, 0-14) concluded a winless season.

St. Genevieve 69, Cathedral 58--Three St. Genevieve players scored in double figures as the Valiants came from behind in a Santa Fe League game. Ruben Aguirre and Paul Martinez each scored 16 points for St. Genevieve (11-11, 7-7) and Dion Contreras added 11. Martinez also had a game-high 13 rebounds and Contreras added 12.

Cathedral was ahead, 33-32, at halftime, but St. Genevieve, led by Aguirre’s six points, outscored Cathedral, 18-9, in the third quarter to forge ahead. Gus Martinez and Javier Montenegro, each with 16 points, led Cathedral (9-5 in league).

Oakwood 63, Holy Martyrs 45--Mitchell Butler had game-high totals of 30 points and 22 rebounds to lead Oakwood (17-5, 13-1) to the Liberty League title. Lloyd Levine had a triple-double of 16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for Oakwood and Eric Leddel had a game-high 14 assists. Viken Tchorbajian scored 17 for Holy Martyrs (11-3 in league). Oakwood led, 33-21, at halftime and wasn’t challenged in the second half.

Oak Park 61, Fillmore 47--Oak Park earned a playoff berth for the first time in its seven-year history with the Tri-Valley League victory at home. Oak Park (10-10, 7-5) was led by Brian Friefeld with 18 points. Mike Birch scored 12 points and Jon Cole added 10. Fillmore’s Larry Roberts had a game-high 22 points .

Oak Park led at halftime, 34-24, but scored only six points in the third quarter. After its lead was cut to two, Oak Park went on a 21-9 run in the fourth quarter. Oak Park made 19 of 28 free throws, including 13 of 15 in the fourth quarter. Fillmore is 8-14 overall, 4-8 in league.

Brentwood 53, Campbell Hall 52--Campbell Hall, which trailed, 31-19, rallied in the second half but fell short in the Delphic League game. Campbell Hall (11-8, 7-6) was led by Donnie Sakaida with 19 points. Ty Leatherman added nine points and four assists. Tim Sutton had 11 rebounds for Campbell Hall. Brentwood (11-10, 5-6) led, 41-33, after three quarters.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Simi Valley 78, Thousand Oaks 50--Paula Cooper scored 22 points and Julie Arlotto added 20 as Simi Valley won its second straight Marmonte League title. It was Simi Valley’s 25th consecutive league victory. Cooper also had 11 rebounds and 3 assists. Arlotto had 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Dani Elton had 12 points and 6 assists for Simi Valley (21-3, 12-0). Kris Pederson scored 13 points for Thousand Oaks (13-11, 8-4). Teammate Amy Chandler added 11 points.
