Roundup : Laguna Beach Deadlocks League Race

Ryan Phillips scored with 10 minutes remaining as the Laguna Beach High School boys’ soccer team upset Laguna Hills, 1-0, Friday at Laguna Beach. The victory turned the Pacific Coast League championship into a four-way tie with the Artists, Hawks, Orange and Woodbridge forced into a playoff today.

Today’s playoffs at Orange High School will determine the league’s playoff participants. Laguna Beach (6-2-2, 14-5-2) plays Orange (7-3, 17-7-1) and Laguna Hills (7-3, 16-6-2) plays Woodbridge (6-2-2, 10-8-2) at 8 a.m.

At 11, the winners meet for first place and the losers play for third. The top three teams qualify for the playoffs.

Keith McDonald made 20 saves in recording his fourth shutout of the season. Kevin Casagrande made 15 saves for the Hawks.

In the Century League:

Villa Park 3, Canyon 2--Jeremy Amen scored on a penalty kick with 10 minutes left for the Spartans at Canyon, giving them a share of the league championship with the Comanches. Amen opened the scoring for Villa Park (5-2-3, 15-2-4). Tim Snitko and Fernie Lapuente then scored for Canyon (5-2-3 in league). Villa Park tied the score, 2-2, on a goal by Jason Everakes.

Santa Ana 1, Santa Ana Valley 1--Santa Ana (3-1-6, 13-2-8) finished third in the league to qualify for the playoffs. Phin Manop scored for Santa Ana Valley (1-5-4 in league), Jose Vasquez for Santa Ana.

In the Empire League:

Esperanza 3, Kennedy 1--Senior Sean Coppage scored on a diving header with 10 minutes remaining at Kennedy to break a 1-1 tie. Ed Corrales scored for the Fighting Irish (5-4-3, 12-5-3) early in the second half. Luis Cabral and Mark Renfro also scored for Esperanza (11-1, 21-2-1).

Pacifica 3, El Dorado 0--El Dorado (6-3-3, 10-5-3) finished second in league with the victory.

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 4, Fullerton 1--Juan Rasailla scored two goals and Brandon Oswald and Steve Fichtelberg had one each as the league champion Lancers (9-1, 14-2) won at home. It was Fichtelberg’s 18th goal of the season and the eighth consecutive game in which he has scored.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 3, Anaheim 0--Chris Stempson scored all three goals in the first half to lead the Tigers in a playoff for third place at Magnolia. The teams had finished with 3-4-1 league records and were playing for the league’s final playoff spot. The Tigers are 7-10-3 overall.

In the Sea View League:

Estancia 5, Tustin 2--Erin Wright scored four goals and made one assist to lead the Eagles (5-4-1, 13-8-1) to third place in the Sea View league. The Eagles played without nine of their starters who were dismissed for disciplinary reasons in the last two weeks. Fernando Millan scored for Estancia late in the first half. Tustin dropped to 4-4-2.

In the South Coast League:

Irvine 1, El Toro 0--Chris Peterson scored with 10 minutes remaining for the Vaqueros (4-3-3, 11-3-6) at El Toro. El Toro is 2-7-1 in league. Goalkeeper Shane Brosnan had 11 saves to record his second shutout of the season for Irvine, which moved into second place.
