San Diego College Baseball : Aztecs Survive San Luis Obispo Rally to Post an 8-7 Victory

The San Diego State University baseball team built a 7-0 lead with a seven-run second inning and held on for an 8-7 nonconference victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Saturday on Smith Field at San Diego.

Danny Martinez got the seven-run rally going with a bases-loaded single that scored two runs. Kasey McKeon followed with a two-run single, and James Campbell’s double scored McKeon.

San Luis Obispo (2-6) made it 7-3 by scoring three fourth-inning runs on three walks, a hit batter and an error. After SDSU (6-1) extended its lead to 8-3, Scott Reaves hit a three-run home run for the Mustangs.

In the ninth, with the score 8-7, SDSU’s Matt Haar struck out pinch-hitter Craig Jacques with two on and two out to earn his first save. Rich Holsman (1-0) was winner. Jeff Sutter (1-1) took the loss.

Point Loma Nazarene 4-20, Pomona-Pitzer 0-0--The Crusaders (2-4) got their first two victories of the season with a nonconference doubleheader sweep at Point Loma.

In the first game, Larry Johnson (1-1) scattered six hits for the victory. John Danis had two RBIs, and Steve Wainwright added a solo home run.

In the second game, Jerry Hill went 5 for 6 with 4 RBIs, Ron Burkland 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs and Wainwright 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs, including a 2-run homer, to lead an 18-hit attack. Rob Kubisiak (1-2) was the winner. Pomona-Pitzer is 2-6.
