Southern Section Soccer Roundup : Woodbridge Goes Overtime to Win

After a 3-3 tie in regulation, and two scoreless overtime periods, Woodbridge High School outscored Valencia, 4-2, in a shoot-out to win a 2-A wild-card boys’ soccer match at Valencia Tuesday.

The Warriors, led by Matt West and Jeff Smith, went 4 for 4 in the shoot-out. Woodbridge advances to 2-A playoffs Thursday at Newport Harbor.

West and Smith each scored two goals. Goalkeeper Mike Goodman made 10 saves for Woodbridge (12-9-2), including two in the shoot-out.

Joe-Max Moore, Dave Galas and Greg Fischbein added one goal each for the Warriors (11-8-4). Chris Stemptson led Valencia (11-11-2) with two goals and Adrian Nawabi scored one.

In other 2-A wild-card matches:

Estancia 2, Rancho Alamitos 1--The Eagles, led by goals by Erin Wright and Kevin Keith in the first half, advance against La Canada (6-4-8) Thursday at La Canada. Chris Jacobson scored for Vaqueros (7-6-2) with 20 minutes remaining. Goalkeeper Mark Tyssee had four saves for the Eagles (14-8-1).

Troy 3, La Quinta 2--Sean Diskin led the Warriors with two goals and Brian Knispel scored one at Troy. Dave Peterson and Chuck Woo both scored for the Aztecs (9-10-3). Troy (8-3) meets Laguna Hills (17-6-2) in the first round Thursday at Laguna Hills.

In a 2-A wild-card girls’ matches:

Esperanza 6, Laguna Beach 0--Teri Fray scored two goals, and Lisa Bowers, Colleen Gamblin, Allison Thuney and Monique Rodriquez each scored one for the Aztecs (12-4-6) at Esperanza. Goalkeeper Stacey Kingman had one save for Esperanza. The Aztecs will play La Quinta in the first round Thursday at La Quinta.

Norco 3, Orange Lutheran 2--Erin Duffy scored to break a 2-2 tie with 30 seconds remaining for Norco at home. Kathie Nichols and Gail Swickard both scored for Orange Lutheran (4-11-2).
