Rolling Hills, Chadwick Seeded in Cage Playoffs
CIF playoffs begin this week in basketball and soccer, with several South Bay teams seeded in their brackets.
Rolling Hills leads the boys’ basketball contingent, receiving the No. 1 seeding in the 3-A playoffs. Chadwick is seeded fourth in the 1-A Division. Boys’ playoffs begin Friday (with the exception of wild-card games that were held Wednesday).
In girls’ playoffs, Morningside is seeded third in the 4-A bracket. Girls games begin Saturday.
Rolling Hills, a surprise 4-A quarterfinalist a year ago, no longer sneaks up on anyone. The Titans, led by Doug Gehr and Cameron Terry, are 22-3 and went undefeated in winning the Bay League title. Other top seeds are Mater Dei in 5-A, Simi Valley in 4-A, Santa Clara in 2-A, Whittier Christian in 1-A and Hesperia Christian in Small Schools.
Morningside, a perennial girls’ basketball power, has a lineup of stars led by senior guard Tia Thomas, juniors Shaunda Greene and Carla Gladden and freshman Lisa Leslie. The Monarchs are seeded behind Lynwood and Buena. Other top seeds are Louisville in 3-A, Lompoc in 2-A, Cerritos Valley Christian in 1-A and Rosamond in Small Schools.
The South Bay boys’ schedule:
4-A--Hawthorne at Westlake. 3-A--Montebello at Rolling Hills; Torrance at Ridgecrest Burroughs, and Burbank at Palos Verdes. 1-A--Chadwick against a wild-card winner. Small Schools--California Christian at South Bay Lutheran and Avalon at Oakwood. All games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
South Bay girls’ openers:
4-A--St. Joseph’s at Redondo; Mira Costa at fourth-seeded Edison; Don Lugo at Morningside, and Santa Ana Valley at Hawthorne. 3-A--La Palma Kennedy at Palos Verdes; South Torrance at Mission Viejo, and Torrance at El Toro. 2-A--St. Bernard at La Quinta and St. Mary’s at home against a wild-card winner. Small Schools--First Lutheran at Wilmington Christian and Avalon at Flintridge Sacred Heart. Games begin at 7:30 p.m.
Boys’ and girls’ soccer playoffs begin today and Friday with two seeded South Bay teams. In boys’ playoffs, West Torrance is seeded fourth in 4-A. In girls’ playoffs, Torrance is seeded fourth in 4-A. Top-seeded boys’ teams are Westlake in 4-A, Esperanza in 3-A and Brea-Olinda in 2-A. Girls’ top seeds are Mission Viejo in 4-A, Laguna Hills in 3-A and Agoura in 2-A.
South Bay boys’ opening round games:
4-A--Hawthorne at Westlake; Burbank at Bishop Montgomery; San Marcos at Mira Costa; Newbury Park at West Torrance; Santa Monica at South Torrance, and Torrance at Hart. Games are scheduled for 3 p.m. today. 3-A--Kennedy at El Segundo; Redondo at Irvine, and Miraleste at second-seeded Loyola. Games are at 3 p.m. Friday. 1-A--Cerritos Valley Christian at St. Bernard and Cantwell at Chadwick. Games at 3 p.m. Friday.
