Gordon Weir; Meteorologist, TV Weatherman

Gordon Weir, believed to be the first professional meteorologist to become a television weatherman in Los Angeles, is dead of lung cancer.

Weir, who was seen on KNBC Channel 4 from 1956 to the mid-1970s, was 68 when he died at Cedars Sinai Medical Center on Feb. 11.

A longtime member of the American Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Union, Weir majored in geology at Caltech and then took additional courses in meteorology.

He entered the Air Force in the early days of World War II and predicted weather in North Africa for invading and advancing Allied forces.

After the war, in addition to his television affiliations, he set up a private weather forecasting business, Allied Weather Consultants. Among his clients were Southern California Gas Co., farmers, contractors and several film and television studios.

Survivors include a sister, a niece and a nephew.
