Orange County wrestlers dominated the upper division of the Southern Section 3-A wrestling championships, taking individual titles in every weight class from 157 pounds to heavyweight Saturday night at West Torrance High School.

Capistrano Valley’s David Hynan (157), San Clemente’s Dru Anderson (168), Valencia’s Fred Jenkins (178), El Toro’s David Grisafe (194) and Savanna’s Tom Osendorf (heavyweight) were winners, leading a contingent of 15 county wrestlers who qualified for the Southern Section Masters meet set for Saturday at Fountain Valley High. The top five finishers in each weight class advanced.

It was a case of like father, like son for Anderson, a 16-year-old sophomore who crushed Warren’s Erik Thureson, 13-6, in the final. His father and off-season coach, Bob, was a Southern Section champion in 1962 for South Torrance. And it was especially gratifying for the younger Anderson, who entered the finals with a modest 8-3 won-lost record after missing much of the season because of injury and illness.

Likewise, Hynan missed three weeks of the season because of a back injury but recovered to win his second consecutive 3-A crown. But Hynan had to go into overtime after blowing a 9-6 lead in the closing moments of regulation.

Embarrassed, he blitzed Rosemead’s Joey Totsis, 10-1, in the three-minute extra session.

Jenkins, 2-A champion a year ago, had no trouble stepping up to the 3-A level, where he beat Dos Pueblos’ Carson Wollert, 10-8, in the final. In running his season record to 26-3, Jenkins avenged an earlier defeat to Wollert by registering three escapes in the final.

Grisafe said he “dodged a lot of bullets” to back up his No. 1 seed with an easy 7-1 victory over Dos Pueblos’ Seth Woodill.

Osendorf, also a No. 1 seed, needed two takedowns in the final period to hold off Cajon’s Luke Parham, 10-6.

Sam Lopez of Valencia was runner-up in the 108-pound division and Capistrano Valley’s Mike Phillips finished second in the 148-pound class, both losing by a point.

Kevin Petrisko, Mike Maciborski and Rex Vollmer of Capistrano Valley also advanced to the Masters meet, as did Pablo Garcia and Craig Pyatt of El Toro, Brett Fry of San Clemente, Sean Westover of Mission Viejo and Ron Blackiston of Magnolia.

In the 2-A division:

Ed Roberts of Laguna Hills and Shawn Ferguson of Orange were the highest Orange County finishers in the 2-A championships at Nogales High School in La Puente.

Roberts finished second in the 168-pound division, and Ferguson came in second in the 194-pound division after defaulting in the final because of a twisted ankle.

Tom Hayes of Laguna Hills finished fourth in the 141-pound division.
