Community College Roundup : Yokota and Gill Score 16 Each to Lead Cypress Past Fullerton

Stacy Yokota and Ana Gill each scored 16 points Wednesday night to lead Cypress College to a 62-59 victory over Fullerton at Cypress in the first round of the women’s Community College Southern Regional basketball playoffs.

Karen Caires, who finished with 12, scored two important baskets for Cypress in the final two minutes.

With Cypress leading by 58-57, Caires hit a 15-foot jumper for a three-point Cypress lead with 1:50 to play. Caires hit a short jumper with 1:31 left to make it 62-59.

Rochell Seabrook led Fullerton with 25 points and Stacy Rooney added 15.

Cypress (20-9), which is ranked 12th in the state, advanced to a second-round game against second-ranked Golden West (31-1) at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Golden West. Fullerton finished at 19-12.

In nonconference softball:

Golden West 5, Rancho Santiago 0--Golden West scored three runs in the first inning, and freshman Kathy Fogg threw a four-hitter and retired 15 of the last 16 batters. It was her third shutout of the season. Fogg, who attended Huntington Beach High, is 5-0.

Saddleback 2, Fullerton 0--Patti Taylor pitched a complete-game one-hitter, leading Saddleback to a victory at Fullerton. The defeat was the first of the season for Fullerton (5-1).

In baseball:

L.A. Harbor 8, Fullerton 5--Kevin Higgins hit two home runs and had five RBIs to lead Harbor to victory.

Tim Churchill hit a home run for Fullerton.

Dave Haggard was the winning pitcher. Brian Coriell (0-1) took the loss, striking out nine.

In South Coast Conference men’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, L.A. Pierce 2--The Rustlers defeated L.A. Pierce by rallying from a 2-1 deficit to win the final two games of the best-of-five match.
