Loss of Beubis Ends in Loss for Alemany, 62-50

When Alemany High senior guard Jenny Beubis went to the bench with her third personal foul only five minutes into Saturday night’s playoff game against Katella, she probably took with her the Indians’ chances of victory.

Alemany would have been hard-pressed to defeat Katella (26-2) even with Beubis, its leading scorer and best ball-handler, on the court. Without her, they scrapped and fought but still lost to Katella, 62-50, in a Southern Section 3-A quarterfinal game at Alemany.

Beubis sat out the remainder of the first half, started the second half with Alemany trailing, 33-21, and 24 seconds into the third period was whistled for her fourth personal foul. She returned to the bench for 4 1/2 minutes, then finished out the game, scoring 16 points on 6-for-15 shooting.

“It killed us when Jenny wasn’t in the game,” Alemany Coach Melissa Melton said. “That third foul, the charging call, was one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen.”

Senior forward Jennifer Kroll tried to take up the slack in Beubis’ absence, scoring 19 points, but hit only nine of 23 shots. Kroll also had 11 rebounds.

Alemany (22-6) made several charges in the second half, but never got closer than seven points.

Serenda Valdez (22 points) and Joni Easterly (20 points and 11 rebounds) led Katella.
