Community College Roundup : Rancho Santiago Wins Softball Opener

The Rancho Santiago College softball team scored runs in the third and fifth inning Wednesday to defeat Cypress, 2-1, in the Orange Empire Conference opener on the Chargers’ field at Cypress.

Sandy Ortiz scored on an error in the third and Lisa Pederson scored on Nancy Morelock’s RBI single in the fifth for the Dons (6-5). Joyce Lyman went the distance on a three-hitter for Rancho Santiago.

In other softball action:

Golden West 6, L.A. Pierce 4--Cheryl McKirnen had a two-run single in the fourth inning to help the Rustlers (11-5) to the nonconference win at Golden West College. Rosann Flores extended her hitting streak to 14 games.

Winning pitcher Robin Bokelman (3-1) allowed five hits and four runs but retired 13 of the last 14 batters.

In men’s volleyball action:

Orange Coast 3, El Camino 0--Brian Lewis had 18 kills and Scott Linquist added 15 kills to help the Pirates to a 15-9, 15-4, 15-13, victory over El Camino in a South Coast Conference match played in the Pirates’ gym at Costa Mesa. Orange Coast is 4-0 conference, 9-1 overall.

Golden West 3, Westmont 1--Kevin Taylor had 12 kills and 6 blocks, and Eddie Rapp had 44 assists to lead the Rustlers to a 16-14, 14-16, 15-12, 15-9, victory over the Warriors in a nonconference match at Westmont. Golden West is to 3-1, and Westmont is 1-2.
