JC Basketball : Saddleback Advances to State Tourney

Freshman forward Vincent Smalls scored 26 points Saturday night to lead Saddleback College to a 59-46 victory over El Camino in a Southern Division community college playoff game at Saddleback.
The Gauchos (25-7) advanced to the State JC basketball tournament, which begins Thursday at Loyola Marymount. This will be Saddleback’s first appearenace in the State tournament since 1983.
Saddleback won despite going without a field goal for more than thirteen minutes in the second half.
Guard Kirkland Howling led the Warriors (26-6) with 18 points.
Other Southern Division playoff finals:
Compton 81, Cerritos 75--Lavert Simpson scored six of his 16 points in overtime to help lead the Tartars (25-6) past the Falcons (28-5) at Cerritos. Andre Wiley of Compton led all scorers with 31 points. Willie Joseph led Cerritos with 22.
Rancho Santiago 72, Santa Barbara 58--Simon Thomas scored 17 points and Victor Wharton and Chris Jefferson each added 16 to lead Rancho Santiago at Santa Ana.
Ventura 88, Imperial Valley 74--Steve Banales scored 21 points, including five three-point shots, to lead the Pirates (28-4).
