College Baseball : UC San Diego’s Nowak Pitches a No-Hitter
Sophomore Rick Nowak of UC San Diego pitched the second no-hitter of his collegiate career Saturday at Southern California College at Costa Mesa.
Nowak (6-0) pitched seven no-hit innings in the first game of a doubleheader. Teammates Kyle Abbot (1-1) and Mike Morgan combined for a four-hit shutout in the nine-inning second game. UCSD (9-6) won both games, 2-0.
Glen Turnipseed drove in the winning run in the first game with a double in the fifth. He doubled again in the second game to drive in both of the Tritons’ runs. David Stanovich was 3 for 4 in the first game and hit the day’s only home run. Southern California College is 5-11.
Cal State Los Angeles 5-2, San Diego State 2-6--In the first game, San Diego State pitcher Mike Erb (2-1) struck out 10 batters, but allowed three runs in the fifth inning en route to his first loss of the season. Third baseman Steve Nichols of Cal State Los Angeles went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Aaron Moore (2-3) was the winning pitcher.
In the second game, the Aztecs gained a 6-0 lead by the fourth inning, John Hammerly (1-1) pitched the mandatory five innings to get his first victory. Doug Royalty finished the game for his second save.
