Luczaj Resigns at Fullerton

Fullerton High School football Coach Martin Luczaj, who inherited a struggling program in 1981 and turned the Indians into playoff participants for six straight seasons, has resigned.

Luczaj, 34, compiled a 52-19 record, winning three league titles and taking the Indians to two Central Conference championship games.

Fullerton lost to El Toro in the 1982 title game and beat La Mirada for the championship in 1984.

“Marty told me that he eventually wants to get into administrative work, perhaps as an athletic director,” said Greg Bice, administrator of the Fullerton Union High School District. Luczaj was unavailable for comment.

Luczaj became Orange County’s youngest head coach at 28 in 1981. The Indians, 1-9 the previous season, were 8-3 and won the Freeway League title.

He was named The Times’ Coach of the Year in 1982 after Fullerton was 13-1 and runner-up to El Toro in the Central Conference.

Luczaj’s players had a penchant for establishing offensive records. Quarterback Mike Willes broke Pat Haden’s Southern Section single-game passing yardage mark with 477 yards against San Bernardino in 1981. Willes’ mark has since been surpassed, but remains a county record.
