HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Woodfin Strikes Out 16 in 2-Hitter as Sylmar Easily Defeats Fairfax

Now that Olonzo Woodfin has learned the difference between throwing and pitching, opposing teams in the East Valley League are beginning to see the difference in his confidence and control. Seeing it and hitting it, however, are two very distinct endeavors.
Woodfin, a 6-4 junior left-hander, struck out 16, surrendered two hits and one earned run as Sylmar defeated Fairfax, 8-1, in a league game at Sylmar on Thursday.
In 17 innings, Woodfin (4-0) has allowed only three hits and one run and has 41 strikeouts.
“Right now, he’s just overpowering,” Sylmar Coach John Klitsner said. “He’s throwing strikes and throwing the ball hard. He’s always had a good arm. Now he’s pitching instead of just throwing it.”
Don Kelley was 3 for 4, including a solo home run in the fourth that put Sylmar on top, 6-1, and drove in three runs for Sylmar (4-0). Sylmar had just five hits, but stole eight bases. “We like to keep the pressure on people,” Klitsner said. “We’ll double steal, play hit and run. We don’t just sit back and wait for a big inning.”
