The last time they met was Sept. 12, 1986, and it was one of the most anticipated high school football games of the year in the Southern Section: Canyon vs. Hart.

Quarterback Ken Sollom vs. quarterback Jim Bonds.

In a 42-32 victory, Sollom completed 13 of 22 passes for 214 yards and 4 touchdowns as Canyon won its 39th straight game. Bonds, meanwhile, completed 22 of 32 passes for 318 yards and 4 touchdowns.

On Tuesday, Sollom and Bonds again faced each other, this time on a baseball field. And in a nonleague doubleheader they weren’t even the main event.

The matchup between the two almost was scrapped when Hart routed Canyon, 27-2, in the first game. Bonds went 4 for 5 with a double, home run, and five runs batted in. Sollom, along with two teammates, was pulled from his outfield position for clowning around during a pitching change in Hart’s 45-minute, 14-run fourth inning.

During the break, the outfielders formed a triangle and tossed a ball among themselves while on their knees and were immediately taken out by Canyon Coach Wally Hammond.

But Hammond put Sollom back in the lineup for the second game.

“I had an idea we might face each other and it was exciting because there’s so much competition between us,” Bonds said. “He’s a great guy and we don’t hold anything against each other off the field.”

Said Sollom: “We’re pretty good friends, but when you get on the field you have no friends. I felt excited going into the game and I wanted to forget the embarrassment of the first game.”

In the battle of the spirals, er fastballs, Bonds came out ahead and Hart (5-2) swept the doubleheader with a 5-1 victory.

Bonds (3-0) allowed one run on four hits during his five-inning stint. He struck out seven and walked one. Sollom (0-2) lasted three innings. He allowed three runs (two unearned) on two hits.

Sollom opened the game by striking out the side. Bonds responded by retiring Canyon (1-7) in order in the first. In the second inning Sollom walked Bonds, who later scored for a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Bonds walked Sollom, who eventually scored to tie the game.

In the third inning, Hart (5-2) scored two runs on an error, five stolen bases and a run-scoring single by David Lee for a 3-1 lead.
