Jeff Ward and Tim Nedin combined to strike out 14 batters in College of the Canyons’ 5-2 Western State Conference win over Bakersfield. Ward fanned four batters in five innings to earn the victory, and Nedin struck out 10 in four innings to get the save. Vic Sotelo, Gary Ray and Roger Nix each had two hits for Canyons (11-3, 7-0 in conference). . . . Dan Russell was 3 for 5 and knocked in two runs with a two-out double in the ninth, but Moorpark (9-9, 4-3 in conference) fell to Santa Monica, 5-3, in a Western State Conference game at Santa Monica. . . . Sebastian Goodlow and John Burnette each had three hits in Pierce’s 6-2 Western State Conference loss to Glendale.

SOFTBALL

Delanne Anderson threw a five-hitter to lead Cal State Northridge (19-5, 9-1 in conference) to a 2-0 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. victory and doubleheader sweep of Chapman. Debbie Dickman (7-2) struck out five batters and allowed one earned run in Northridge’s 6-2 win in the first game.

MEN’S TENNIS

Cal State Northridge lost just one set in defeating Westmont, 9-0, in a nonconference match at Westmont. The day’s most lopsided score came in No. 6 singles, where Steve Glass defeated Bruce Smith, 6-0, 6-0.

Pierce (12-2, 11-0 in conference) kept its grip on first place in the Western State Conference with an 8-1 victory at Santa Barbara. Pierce was led by Dave Valastro, who defeated Sean Angel, ranked 28th in the state.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Allison Kincaid and Nicole Gillis each won singles matches and teamed to win the No. 1 doubles match as Cal State Northridge (7-5) defeated Carlton College of Minnesota, 7-2, in a nonconference match.
