Prep Baseball : August, Bardens Lead Capistrano Valley, 9-0

Senior Lance August pitched a one-hit complete game to lead Capistrano Valley High School to a 9-0 victory over San Clemente in a South Coast League baseball game Friday at Capistrano Valley.

San Clemente’s only hit was an infield single by Adam Greek in the fifth inning.

August also was 3 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI. Bill Bardens was 4 for 4 with three RBIs and also stole a base for Capistrano Valley (3-0, 8-1). Marcel Duran was 2 for 4 and Brian Walker was 2 for 3.

San Clemente is 0-3, 1-7.

In other league play:

Irvine 3, El Toro 2--Freshman John Bretza pitched a complete game eight-hitter and got his only strikeout with two out and the tying run on third in the bottom of the seventh as Irvine (2-1, 4-5) won at El Toro.

Steve Wood was 4 for 4 for El Toro (1-2, 7-3).

Mission Viejo 7, Dana Hills 4--Winning pitcher Jack Bailey allowed only three hits and struck out 13 batters to lead the Diablos (2-1) at Dana Hills. Mission Viejo shortstop Eric Ekdahl was 3 for 5 and center fielder Dwayne Lee was 2 for 4 with one RBI.

Jay Hollis hit a home run for Dana Hills (1-2, 5-5) in the first inning. Three of the Dolphins’ runs were unearned.

In the Century League:

Canyon 4, El Modena 2--Winning pitcher John Cummings had 12 strikeouts in 5 innings to lead the Comanches at home. On offense, Cummings was 3 for 3 with a home run, double and single and two RBIs. El Modena (1-2) was led by Ross Bauer who was 2 for 3 with one RBI.

Foothill 6, Santa Ana 2--Doug Kopcha gave up six hits and struck out 10 in seven innings for the Knights at Foothill. Kopcha also went 2 for 3 with a run scored and Glenn Takabayashi went 2 for 3 to help Foothill (1-2, 4-5).

Villa Park 10, Santa Ana Valley 7 (9 innings)--A two-run error by the shortstop with the bases loaded allowed the game-winning run in the ninth inning for the Spartans at Santa Ana Valley. Tom Roth singled to drive in Pat Riley for the final run for Villa Park. John Watrous (1-0) gave up one hit and struck out two in the final two innings for the Spartans (1-2, 4-6). Santa Ana Valley is 2-1.

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 11, Kennedy 3--The Golden Hawks (2-0, 10-1) scored three runs in the second inning and four in the third en route to an easy victory at home. Phil Nevin went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Chris Facione went 3 for 3 with a double and scored two runs. The winning pitcher was Brian Behnke (2-0). Kennedy is 0-2, 3-6.

Esperanza 11, Cypress 6--Winning pitcher Doug Sanders pitched six innings and had two RBIs to lead Esperanza at Cypress. Bart Goldman went 2 for 5 with two doubles for the Aztecs (2-0). Cypress (0-2, 3-7) was led by Steve Winterburn’s two RBIs.

Pacifica 6, Katella 5--Shelby Hart scored the game-tying run for the Mariners in the sixth inning after Katella catcher Wade Farley made an error. Mike Short gave up two hits and five runs to record the victory for Pacifica (2-0, 6-3). Oscar Ravero went 2 for 3 with a double in the fourth inning for the Mariners.

Los Alamitos 12, Loara 2--Randy Hines (3-0) gave up eight hits and struck out one in seven innings for Los Alamitos at Loara. Hines has given up two earned runs in 21 innings this season for the Griffins. Ricky Paul went 2 for 2 with two RBIs, Mike Scott went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Nick Beljajev went 2 for 2 with an RBI to lead Los Alamitos (1-1, 5-6). Andy Janney (1-1) allowed 12 hits and struck out 1 in 3 innings for Loara (0-2, 7-2).

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 8, Santiago 2--James Marquez was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and Tim Park was 3 for 4 with a run scored to lead the Aztecs (3-0, 8-1) at Santiago. Marquez was the game’s winning pitcher, he allowed six hits and struck out five. Santiago is 0-3, 2-4.

Rancho Alamitos 13, Bolsa Grande 8--Mike Willie was 3 for 5 with two doubles and four RBIs to lead the Vaqueros (2-0-1, 3-3-1) in a game called after six and 1/2 innings because of darkness at Bolsa Grande.

Chris Culbert went 3 for 4 with three RBIs also for Rancho Alamitos.

Mike Robinson was 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs for Bolsa Grande (2-1, 4-2).

Garden Grove 4, Los Amigos 1--Marc Lung (2-1) gave up one hit and struck out 12 in 7 innings to lead the Argonauts at Garden Grove. Bill Moll went 2 for 2 and scored a run and Steve Frueh went 2 for 3 with a stolen base for Garden Grove (1-2, 4-3). Jim Siddell allowed eight hits and struck out seven in seven innings for Los Amigos (1-1-1, 1-7-1).

In the Olympic League:

Valley Christain 7, Capistrano Valley Christian 4--Greg Bush hit a two-run home run and Kurt Dykstra followed with a solo home run in the sixth to lead Valley Christian (1-0, 9-1) at Capistrano Valley Christian.

Capistrano Valley Christian (0-2, 3-7) was led by Doug Lindstrom (2 for 3, two RBIs) and Bret Biegert (2 for 3, scored two runs). Marc Swanson extended his 10 game hitting with a single.

Orange Lutheran 7, Ontario Christian 1--Jeff Simmons (1-0) allowed six hits and struck out nine for the Lancers at Ontario Christian. Rich Gress went 3 for 4 with a RBI and scored a run to lead Orange Lutheran (1-1, 7-5).

In the Orange League:

Magnolia 3, Anaheim 0--Mike Tietge allowed four hits and struck out nine for Magnolia at Anaheim. Mark Woodburn went 2 for 3 for the Sentinels (1-2). Anaheim is 0-3.

Brea-Olinda 12, Valencia 1--Rick Rizzo went 3 for 4 with one RBI and Gary Chiotti went 2 for 3 with two RBIs to lead the Wildcats at Brea-Olinda. Jim Murray (2-2) gave up four hits and struck out five in four innings for Brea-Olinda (3-0, 4-5). The Wildcats had 15 hits and 12 runs. Robert Navarette gave up seven hits and struck out one for the Tigers (2-1). Mike Edwards hit a home run in the fourth inning for Valencia.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 14, Costa Mesa 1--Keith McDonald went 3 for 5 with two home runs and seven RBIs and Ted Savage went 4 for 5 with four runs, two doubles and three RBIs to lead the Artists at Laguna Beach. Savage is batting .609 (14 for 23). Scott McDonald (1-2) allowed four hits, struck out four and went 2 for 5 with a three-run home run and three RBIs for Laguna Beach (1-2, 2-5).

Trabuco Hills 6, Orange 1--Aaron Mangold, Bob Perez and John Shetland had two hits each to lead the Mustangs (3-0, 5-1-1) at home. Winning pitcher Bret Miller (3-0) struck out five batters in 5 innings.

In the Sea View League:

Saddleback 10, Newport Harbor 8--Sean Therien was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and Brian Hoialmen hit a three-run home run to lead the Roadrunners (3-0, 6-3) at home. Saddleback had seven hits, Newport Harbor four. The Sailors scored seven runs in the sixth inning on six walks. Saddleback pitchers walked 10.

Tustin 7, Estancia 5--Matt Lundin hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to help the Tillers (3-0, 5-4) rally. Chris Floph (3-0) pitched a five-hitter for the victory. Estancia is 1-2.

University 6, Corona del Mar 2--Winning pitcher Darrell Sawicki (3-0) struck out 10 to lead the Trojans at home. Sawicki has struck out 23 batters in his last two starts. University’s Jerry Gandara was 3 for 3 with an RBI. Steve Keer and Steve Conner each were 2 for 3 for University (2-1, 5-5). Conner had a two-run double in the fourth inning.
