COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS : 11-Run 1st Inning Propels Canyons to Conference Win

College of the Canyons scored 11 runs in the first inning and put together a 16-hit attack to hand Glendale a 16-7 Western State Conference loss on Tuesday at Glendale.

Mike Bible drove in six runs with a double and home run, and four Canyons pitchers made the runs stand up against Glendale (5-8 in conference). Canyons (17-3) remains in first place with a 13-0 record.

BASEBALL

Sebastian Goodlow’s bases-loaded triple highlighted a five-run first inning as Pierce crushed Santa Monica, 17-8, in a Western State Conference game. John Hauptman added a grand slam for Pierce in the seventh and Mark Bowen had three hits and two runs batted in. Pierce had 16 hits. . . . Tory Knox hit a two-run home run in the first inning to lead Moorpark (13-10, 8-5) to a 6-3, Western State Conference victory over Bakersfield. Mike Chase (2-0) walked only one batter in six innings to pick up the win. . . . Whitworth College, Wash., took advantage of two Cal Lutheran errors to score four runs in the fifth inning and scored a 10-5, nonleague victory over the Kingsmen. Cal Lutheran (8-18) committed eight errors that led to seven unearned runs. Cal Lutheran’s Scott Francis was 3 for 5 with a home run.

TENNIS

Dave Valastro defeated Colton Lazar, 6-4, 6-3, in a No. 1 singles match to lead Pierce (14-2, 13-0 in conference) to an 8-1 Western State Conference win over Glendale. Robert Grundy and Alez Olaya beat Rick Luengo and Leon Gazaraian, 6-0, 6-1, in No. 1 doubles. Pierce remains in first place, one game ahead of Bakersfield.

GOLF

Cal State Northridge finished fifth in a 10-team field with a 1,137 score at the Frank Scott invitational at Laguna Niguel. California won the team championship with a 1,094.

Pat Boyd of Cal State Northridge tied for fifth in the individual competition at 217. Teammates Tony Chieffo and Wayne Tyni each shot 228, Bill Cullum shot 233, Tim Hogarth shot a 235 and Gary Finneran finished at 239.
