COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS : Canyons Wins Despite Five Errors, 12-7

College of Canyons Coach Len Mohney missed Thursday’s game against Santa Monica recovering from surgery and may have saved himself from further pain.

Canyons committed five errors and gave up six unearned runs but still managed to overcome its mistakes and beat Santa Monica, 12-7, in a Western State Conference baseball game at Canyons.

Len Hokanson’s two-run, two-out single in the fourth inning broke a 1-1 tie and put Canyons ahead to stay.

Mark Gieseke and Roger Nix each had three hits to pace Canyons’ 12-hit attack. Gieseke also drove in three runs.

Winning pitcher Fred Riscen (5-2) pitched a complete game. He struck out eight and walked four.

Canyons (18-3, 14-0 in conference) holds a five-game lead in the WSC.

MEN’S TENNIS

Dave Valastro won his 14th consecutive match in No. 1 singles play as Pierce (15-2, 14-0 in conference) swept Moorpark, 9-0, in a Western State Conference match at Pierce.

Pierce, ranked No. 2 in the state, can clinch a tie for the WSC title with a victory at Ventura on Tuesday.

Robert Grundy (15-3) and Alex Olaya (15-2) won their singles matches and teamed up to win the No. 1 doubles match.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Cal State Northridge’s Kelly Grattan defeated Mary Holycross, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, for the Matadors’ only victory in an 8-1 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. loss to Cal Poly Pomona at Pomona. The loss snapped a three-match winning streak for Northridge (6-6, 5-3 in conference).
