Orange County College Baseball : Fullerton Wins Rain-Shortened Game

Longo Garcia threw a rain-shortened no-hitter Friday night as Cal State Fullerton defeated Cal State Long Beach, 7-0, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball game at Fullerton.

The game was called in the bottom of the fifth.

Garcia (7-2), a junior transfer from Orange Coast College, allowed only two walks.

It was the 10th consecutive time the Titans (3-1, 23-12) have beaten the 49ers (1-3, 10-25-1).

A hit batter, a double by Mike Ross and a throwing error by third baseman Derek Stewart produced two Fullerton runs in the first inning.

Catcher Mike Ham singled home a run in the third and the Titans added four runs in the fifth. Fullerton had two men on with two outs when the game was stopped.

Andy Mota had a two-run single and Mark Baca added a sacrifice fly.

The two teams play again today at 1 p.m. at Fullerton.

UC Irvine 10, UC Santa Barbara 2--Jeff Overdank hit a a home run and had four RBIs for the Anteaters at Santa Barbara. Doug Kline went 3 for 5, and drove in two RBIs and shortstop Chris Gallego went 3 for 5 and scored three runs for the Anteaters, who had 15 hits.

Irvine, which has won 10 of its last 14 games, scored four runs in the fourth inning to build an 8-0 lead.

Junior right-hander Craig Brink (5-3) pitched his third straight complete game, picking up his fifth straight victory. Mike Myers (1-4) was chased after 3 innings. He was relieved by Steve Connolly.

Santa Barbara, the preseason conference favorite, is 1-3, 16-14-2.

The teams play again today at 1 p.m. at Santa Barbara.

In nonconference games:

Chapman 9, Hawaii 6--Brent Rhylick and Tony Gardea hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning to lead the Panthers at Hart Park.

Chapman (15-16) led, 3-0, after two innings, but the Rainbows (18-15) scored six runs on eight hits in the third. Chapman came back with two runs in the third on two hits, and then came up with four runs after two outs in the seventh. Bucky Bollinger singled and Darren Nelson followed with a double. Rhylick hit his second home run and Gardea followed with his fourth.

Ron Hubel (2-1) pitched 4 scoreless innings in relief. Hawaii’s Alan Higuchi (0-1) took the loss.

Southern California College 4, UC San Diego 3--Robert Mansfield (3-6) pitched a complete game for the Vanguards (11-19) at at San Diego. Steve Overeem was 2 for 4 and Carlos Salazar hit a home run for SCC.
