Corey Johnson, an assistant athletic director at the University of Miami for the last four years, Monday was named athletic director at Cal State Long Beach.

He replaces John Kasser, who resigned March 4 to become associate executive director of the College Football Assn.

Johnson, 39, a native of Franklin, Minn., was an assistant football coach at California from 1978-1982.

He said his first priority would be to hire a men’s basketball coach, a position that has been vacant since March 2 when Ron Palmer resigned.

Johnson indicated that 49er assistant coach Ed Ratleff--one of more than 100 applicants--will be one of four or five finalists.

His next pressing task, Johnson said, will be to begin raising the $500,000 required by July 1, 1988, to enable 49er football to continue.
