Los Angeles Times 1987 ALL-STARS : Trio of All-Stars Paced Valley Christian Girls Nearly to Top of State

Donna Pollema, Kari Parriott and Tricia Reitsma made a pact before the prep basketball season began in November. They agreed to win big.

Then the senior girls from Valley Christian High school in Cerritos kept their pledge, running off 24 wins in a row before losing to Red Bluff in the title contest of the state’s Division II playoffs.

The three seniors earned spots on The Times 1986-87 All-Southeast girls basketball team.

It was the third consecutive appearance on the team by Pollema, the second for Parriott and first for Reitsma. They join seven other players on the team.

“They blended together so well,” said Coach Eleanor Dykstra of the Crusader trio. “Our success was a team effort, even though it often looked like Donna and Kari were carrying the load.”

Parriott, who will attend Oregon State, was named the Most Valuable Player of the Southern Section’s 1-A Division. Pollema, who is undecided about her playing future, earned a first-team 1-A berth, as did Cindy Vyskocil of Whittier Christian, another three-time honoree on The Times team.

Here’s a look at the All-Southeast team:

Cindy Vyskocil, Whittier Christian--The 6-2 senior forward-center, who will attend Arizona State, makes her third consecutive appearance on the team. As a junior she led the Southern Section in scoring, but this season dropped to third. She averaged 28 points a game.

Kari Parriott, Valley Christian--She’s headed for Oregon State after a senior season in which she led the area in scoring average (29 points) and also managed 14 rebounds a contest. The 6-3 center was named the Southern Section’s Division 1-A Player of the Year.

Donna Pollema, Valley Christian--The 6-2 forward makes her third consecutive appearance on the team. During that period, Valley Christian won two Southern Section titles and advanced to the semifinals once. Although tall, she mastered the 15-foot shot and averaged 18.4 points during the regular season. She grabbed 12.5 rebounds a game.

Tricia Reitsma, Valley Christian--The 5-8 guard made the passes and ran the offense that opened up Pollema and Parriott inside. A controlled and intent player, she had eight assists a game.

Molly Wampler, Gahr--The 6-1 1/2 center returns to the team for the second consecutive year. She averaged 22 points and 15 rebounds for the Gladiators.

Cheryl Humphrey, Gahr--At 5-3, she’s the smallest player on the team, nevertheless she stood out, averaging 7 points, 4 steals and 4 assists a game.

Rachel Daugherty, Whittier--The 5-9 senior was voted the MVP of the Whitmont League after leading Whittier to the league title. She averaged 20 points, 8 rebounds and 3 1/2 steals. Daugherty is “an excellent outside shooter,” said Bell Gardens Coach Gilberto Limon.

Jeanne Amos, Bell Gardens--The only sophomore to make the team. “An excellent post player,” said Whittier Head Coach Lance Young. The 5-7 forward averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds. She also runs cross-country and is the defending frosh-soph track champion in three events.

Bridgette Eaves, South Gate--At 5-10, she averaged 17.4 points and 18 rebounds for the Rams and shared MVP honors in the Eastern League with Martha Ramirez of Garfield. She scored 27 points in an opening round game of the City Section 2-A Division playoffs.

Trish Gibson, La Mirada--Another player making her third appearance on the team. The 6-3 center averaged 20.2 points and 12 rebounds a game for the Matadores, who finished second to Artesia in the Suburban League. She has signed with Loyola Marymount.

The all-star boys and girls teams, each consisting of 10 members, their coaches and parents will be guests of the Times at 9 a.m. Sunday at the annual Times High School Basketball Awards Brunch where all-star teams from 10 circulation areas will be honored at the Anaheim Hilton. The featured Speaker will be first-year USC Coach George Raveling. The players and coaches of the year from each area will be announced.

The teams were chosen on the basis of a poll of area coaches, who are asked to fill out ballots nominating their own players and opponents, plus the observations of college scouts and sportswriters. Each player will receive the traditional Times golden basketball plaque and award certificate.
