Lyman Pitches Second Perfect Game of Season for Rancho Santiago, 1-0
Joyce Lyman pitched a perfect game, her second of the season, to lead Rancho Santiago College to a 1-0 victory over Saddleback Wednesday in an Orange Empire Conference softball game at Rancho Santiago.
Lyman set a college record with her fourth no-hitter of the season.
The Dons, two-time defending state champions, have a one-game lead over Saddleback with seven conference games left. The teams will meet once more this season.
Lyman (13-3), a freshman left-hander from Westminster High School, struck out three and allowed only two fly balls, both in the seventh inning.
Rancho Santiago (11-2, 18-7) scored in the sixth on a squeeze bunt by Lee Bladow.
Sandy Martinez, who accepted a scholarship to Florida State before the game, singled to open the sixth. Christienne Kalehuawehe was safe on a fielder’s choice when she tried to sacrifice, and pitcher Patti Taylor’s throw was late at second.
Sandy Ortiz sacrificed the runners to second and third, and Martinez scored on Bladow’s sacrifice.
Taylor (20-2) took the loss for the Gauchos (10-3, 26-6).
