The San Fernando Valley Rugby and Football Club will travel north today to compete in the Santa Barbara International Rugby Tournament on the UC Santa Barbara campus. The San Fernando team, defending Division II champion, will open the 40-team tournament against a UCSB alumni team at 8:40 a.m. before meeting Kern County at noon. Team members take part in a scrum, upper right, while Chris Engle tries to avoid a tackle, lower left. San Fernando, which is represented by players from five foreign countries--South Africa, Argentina, England, Wales and Ireland--has been led this season by team captain Kenny Webber, Mike Adams and Clive Thomas of South Africa, lower right. Stu Group, the player-coach and previously team scoring leader, will return to the lineup this weekend after a six-week layoff because of a broken collarbone. San Fernando also won the 1983 Division II final. The team will make a three-week tour of Australia and New Zealand in June in conjunction with the first World Cup of Rugby, a 16-nation tournament.
