America’s Cup winner Dennis Conner gave a less-than-ringing endorsement to his hometown’s bid to be the site of the next yacht races in 1991.
“I’m from San Diego,” Conner said. “I live in San Diego. I’d love to see it in San Diego. I grew up here, my friends are here, I’m a commodore of the yacht club, this is my life, everything I owe comes from this community, but I also see the whole picture.
“I’m an American, and America helped win this. A broad-base of the technology came from America, the bulk of money came from America. Frankly, less than 10% of the money we spent came from San Diego.”
