A two-alarm fire Wednesday night at a downtown building forced the evacuation of occupants and the closing of several streets near Broadway, officials said.

No one was injured in the blaze, which took place at a three-story commercial structure at 424 W. Broadway. The fire is believed to have started on the vacant third floor, said Larry Cooke, a spokesman for the San Diego Fire Department, and much of the damage was limited to that floor.

When firefighters arrived at the scene at 7:31 p.m., the fire was burning through the roof of the building. About 60 firefighters managed to prevent the blaze from spreading to adjoining structures, authorities said.

An unspecified number of people were evacuated from several businesses at the site, including an adult entertainment club on the second floor, officials said. Traffic was halted on Broadway, between Union and Columbia streets, and on Union, between C and E streets. Traffic at State and Union streets also was diverted.

There was no damage estimate and the cause of the blaze is being investigated.
