COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS : Canyons Is Upset by Pierce, 7-6

Mike Rosenberg led off the 10th inning with a triple and Paul Plyler followed with a single to give Pierce a 7-6 upset over Canyons in a Western State Conference game.

The loss was the first in conference play for Canyons (23-5, 17-1 in conference), which is ranked third in Southern California. Last weekend, Canyons lost to Merced, 8-4, in the Allan Hancock tournament to end a 21-game winning streak.

Plyler, who pitched the top of the 10th inning for the Brahmas, picked up his first win of the season against two losses with his game-winning hit. Pierce is 11-17, 7-12 in conference.

BASEBALL

Dan Russell and Corey Aurand both had two-run doubles to cap a six-run fifth inning for Moorpark (18-13, 11-8) in a 16-4 win over Glendale (8-9 in conference) in a Western State Conference game at Glendale. Moorpark’s Rick Allen continued a hot hitting steak, going 2 for 4. He has 16 hits in his past 24 at-bats.

Ed Trujillo hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to lead Westmont (20-20, 12-7) over The Master’s, 10-7, in an NAIA District III game at The Master’s. Todd Skinner was 4 for 5, including a double and a home run, and had four runs batted in for Master’s (22-19, 14-6).

Antelope Valley scored 11 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 23-14 Southern California Athletic Conference win over Valley. Antelope Valley held a 12-4 lead going into the seventh when Valley scored nine runs. Antelope Valley (18-11) countered with one run in the bottom of the inning. Antelope Valley had five home runs, including two in the eighth inning.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge beat UC Santa Barbara, 2-0, 3-0, in a nonconference doubleheader at Borchard Park in Newbury Park. In the first game, Lisa Martin (8-1) pitched a two-hitter and Barbara Jordan and Beth Onestinghel scored on Kelly Winn’s triple. CSUN (43-6) scored three runs in the third inning of the second game. Onestinghel had a two-run single and Debbie Dickman (14-3) tossed a one-hitter.
