Share

Artesia Boulevard at Manchester Avenue was closed to traffic in both directions for more than two hours Saturday morning, as hazardous materials specialists cleaned up a chemical spill, fire officials said.

A caller told fire officials just after 6 a.m. that a pool of green liquid was “steaming” in the westbound lanes of Artesia Boulevard, said fire dispatcher Victor Baca. It took hazardous materials specialists until about 8:30 a.m. to clean up the chemical, which investigation revealed to be muriatic acid used in swimming pool maintenance.

The street was reopened soon after, Baca said. Officials did not know the source of the spill Saturday, and the incident is under investigation. There were no injuries and evacuation of the neighborhood was not necessary, Baca said.
