Reggie Rogers, a defensive end at the University of Washington selected on the first round of this week’s National Football League draft by the Detroit Lions, will be charged with gross-misdemeanor assault for an incident involving his former girlfriend, according to Doug Whalley, chief criminal deputy with the Seattle City Attorney’s Office. He said Friday that Rogers will be ordered to appear in city court and answer the charge, which carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $5,000 fine.

Last June, Rogers’ older brother, Don, died of a cocaine overdose in Sacramento. Don, who had played for UCLA, was a standout defensive back for the Cleveland Browns.

Whalley said there was enough information gathered from Reggie Rogers’ ex-girlfriend, Alicia M. Wright, and a witness to charge the 6-foot-7, 255-pound player with assault. She claims that Rogers grabbed her around the neck and threw her against a wall outside her apartment on April 22 while they argued about a purse he had given her earlier.
