College Roundup : Irvine Leads PCAA Men’s Tennis Tournament
UC Irvine took a two-point lead over Cal State Long Beach after Saturday’s semifinals of the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. men’s tennis championships at Las Vegas Saturday. The Anteaters swept six singles and three doubles matches without dropping a set.
Irvine, which split two dual matches with Long Beach, leads the 49ers, 45-43. The finals are today.
Among UCI’s winners were Mark Kaplan, who defeated UC Santa Barbara’s Kip Brady, 6-3, 7-5, in No. 1 singles, and Trevor Kronemann, who defeated UCSB’s Jeff Greenwald, 6-2, 6-1, in No. 2 singles. Kaplan and Kronemann defeated Nevada Las Vegas’ Scott Warner and Crombie Hatfield, 7-6, 7-5, in the No. 1 doubles semifinal.
In the PCAA women’s tennis championships at San Jose, UCI dropped to fourth place when only two Anteater doubles teams advanced to today’s finals.
In PCAA softball:
Cal State Fullerton 3-0, Fresno State 2-2 (first game 8 innings)--Fresno State’s Melanie Parrent (18-8) threw a three-hitter in the second game to lead the Bulldogs (24-5, 44-14) to a split with the Titans (25-3, 49-6) at Fresno.
In the first game, Missy Coombes’ single scored Tiny Glomboske with the winning run for Fullerton in the top of the eighth.
Connie Clark (27-2) allowed two runs and eight hits in each game for Fullerton.
