COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS : Stingy CSUN Wins 3 Games and a Title

On the strength of complete-game performances by Debbie Dickman, Delanee Anderson and Lisa Martin on Saturday, the Cal State Northridge softball team won the Cal State Sacramento Tournament.

Martin (10-1), who was named the most valuable pitcher, threw a one-hitter as Northridge defeated Portland State, 3-0, in the title game. Priscilla Rouse, the most valuable offensive player, had two hits and drove in a run.

In the semifinal game, CSUN (52-6) had 10 hits to support a four-hitter by Anderson (15-2) and defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 4-1. Rouse had three hits and Beth Onestinghel, who had two hits, picked up her 33rd run batted in, a school, single-season record.

In CSUN’s first game Saturday, Dickman (18-3) pitched a one-hitter as Northridge pounded Cal State Hayward, 7-0, in a game called after five innings because of the tournament’s seven-run rule.

TENNIS

Robert Grundy of Pierce defeated teammate John Freeman, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, to win the Western State Conference singles championship at the Pierpont Racquet Club in Ventura. Grundy advanced to the final by upsetting Ventura’s Dan Mainzer, the conference’s Player of the Year, 6-3, 6-2, in a semifinal match earlier.
