HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : BASEBALL

Don Pederson hit a two-run home run--his fifth of the season and school-record 10th of his career--to lead Saugus over Quartz Hill, 4-3. Saugus (15-5, 10-2) beat pitcher Scott Weiss for the third time in his career--the only three losses he has suffered--to remain one game ahead of Canyon and two in front of Quartz Hill (8-4) in the Golden League.

Travis Regnolds struck out a school-record 16 and pitched a three-hitter as Canyon (13-7, 9-3) beat Palmdale, 8-2, in a Golden League game. . . . Dean Fausett had four hits and Jim Bonds had a home run and pitched four innings as Hart beat San Gabriel, 21-1, in a Foothill League game.

Dave Waco’s run-scoring single with two outs and the bases-loaded in the seventh inning gave Chatsworth a 3-2 victory over Reseda and keep the Chancellors in first place in the West Valley League.

Kasey Fink’s first home run of the season--a grand slam in the fourth inning--highlighted an 18-hit attack as Canoga Park (12-3, 8-3) won its 10th straight with a 26-4 rout of Taft in a West Valley League game. Alan Paar had five singles and seven RBIs to help Adam Schulhofer (7-1) picked up the victory. . . . Cleveland had back-to-back doubles and five singles in a seven-run sixth inning to defeat El Camino Real, 10-6, in a West Valley League game. Lance Mandel had three hits and Mike Aranzullo, Jimmy Doushgounian and Matt Hedding each had two hits for Cleveland (8-7, 5-6).

Chris Spears threw a two-hitter as Crespi (15-5-1, 7-1-1) shut out St. Francis, 2-0, and clinched a playoff spot in a Del Rey League game. . . . Matt McElreath homered, doubled and drove in three runs to lead Notre Dame (9-8-1, 6-3-1) to an 11-9 victory over Loyola (7-8, 2-5-2). Greg Haptor (3 for 4), Brian Woolley (3 for 4) and Jeff Antoon (3 for 5) also hit well for the Knights.

Nino Romo pitched five innings to earn his first win and lead Sylmar to a 14-4 victory over Hollywood (0-14 in league) in an East Valley League game. Tony Taisacan had a three-run triple in the first for Sylmar (12-6, 10-4).

Greg Nealon threw a two-hitter to lead Poly (15-3, 13-1) to a 14-0 victory over Grant in an East Valley League game. Nealon (7-2) retired the last 18 batters in order. . . . Robert Chavez’ bases loaded single in the fifth inning gave San Fernando (8-7, 7-4) a 6-4 Mid-Valley League victory over Monroe (4-7).

Tim Meyer hit a two-run home run and Dave Morrison hit a grand slam to highlight seven-run sixth inning as Chaminade (8-10, 6-5) beat Cathedral, 11-0, in a Santa Fe League game. . . . Marty Holly went 3 for 5 to lead Harvard (9-8, 6-5) to an 18-7 Santa Fe League win at Salesian.

Jeff Light’s two-run homer in the first inning and Keyan Cook’s three-run homer in the fourth propelled Montclair Prep (17-4, 10-1) past Western Christian, 9-7, in an Alpha League game. . . . Steve Dempsey struck out 14 as L.A. Lutheran beat Marshall, 5-3, in an Alpha League game. . . . Shane Wight had a double, triple and three RBIs to highlight a nine-run second inning as L.A. Baptist defeated Village Christian, 21-10, in an Alpha League game.

Burroughs (8-12, 3-9) committed eight errors in dropping a 9-7 Foothill League game to Schurr. . . . Marc Williams threw a five-hitter and struck out 16 as Oakwood (9-1-1, 7-0) beat Southwestern, 13-2, in a Liberty League game. . . . Ed Campaniello hit a home run and Doug Johns had two hits but Agoura (5-10, 3-7) lost to Santa Paula, 9-3, in a Frontier League game.

SOFTBALL

Burbank scored two unearned runs to shut out San Gabriel, 2-0, in a Foothill League game. Kym Bailey (8-0) and Debbie Day combined for a three-hitter.

Consecutive singles by Jamie Heggen, Angie Gregoire, Jamie McDaniel and Kris Cunningham produced two runs in the third inning as Thousand Oaks (19-6, 8-2) edged Camarillo, 4-1, in a Marmonte League game. Shireen Campbell (11-4) threw a three-hitter, striking out 10.

Erin Sweeney hit a solo home run and Melissa Mayhan scattered four hits as La Reina defeated Fillmore, 6-3, in a Tri-Valley League game. Sandy Reese, Nicole Radford and Carolyn Russo had two hits each for La Reina (13-5, 8-3). . . . Kristyn Hughes and Heidi Ogawa each hit three-run homers to lead Oak Park over Carpinteria, 20-4.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Robbie Rappaport had 20 kills and Tim Jensen had 12 kills as Campbell Hall (14-4, 9-4) defeated St. Bernard, 15-6, 10-15, 15-9, 15-8, and clinched second place in the Camino Real League. Setter Ty Leatherman had 45 assists.

Chris Faucher had 10 kills, and Dan Scully and Chris McGee added six each, to lead Crespi (14-5) to a 15-12, 16-14, 16-14, nonleague win over Montclair Prep.

GOLF

Roger Makemson and Marc Riches each shot a three-over-par 74 to lead Taft to a 391-486 City 5-A League win over Birmingham at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana. Marshall Solomon added a 79 for Taft (8-0 in league), while Scott Sobel led Birmingham (3-4 in league) with an 83.

TENNIS

Chatsworth (8-3, 5-1) recorded its fourth straight shutout in taking a 7-0 West Valley League match at Reseda (0-6). Oren Wolk and Pethan Tin both defeated their Reseda opponents by 6-0, 6-1 scores, and the doubles team of Mark Swartz and Tony Oestling won, 6-0, 6-0.
