HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Fairfax Defeats Wild Woodfin

Olonzo Woodfin returned to the mound Tuesday, but the left-hander struggled with his control and Sylmar lost, 4-2, to Fairfax in an East Valley League game at Sylmar. Woodfin (7-3), who sat out last week with a pulled muscle in his left shoulder, gave up 6 hits, walked 11 and struck out 11. Sylmar is 13-7.

Fairfax (8-8) scored the winning run in the fourth when George Baker’s single scored Gerado Contreras.

Steve Risinger (7-1) pitched four innings and also hit a three-run homer in a six-run second inning as Saugus (17-5, 12-2) clinched its second straight Golden League title with a 6-1 victory over Burroughs (Ridgecrest).

Travis Regnolds allowed two hits as Canyon defeated Antelope Valley, 8-2, in a Golden League game. Regnolds (7-4) had five strikeouts to increase his single-season school record to 111. Ken Sollom had a three-run home run for Canyon (14-8, 10-4), which had 10 stolen bases.

Notre Dame (11-8-1, 7-4-1) blew a two-run lead in the sixth and lost at St. John Bosco, 4-3, in a Del Rey League game. Notre Dame starter Tim DeGrasse allowed one run and struck out eight in five innings, but reliever Mike Peterson allowed three runs in the sixth.

Art Lowe had four hits, including two doubles and a home run, to lead Chatsworth to an 18-2 win over Taft in a West Valley League game. Rex McMackin of Chatsworth (16-5, 10-3) also had four hits and stretched his hitting streak to 20 games.

Aaron Marks doubled in two runs in the top of the 11th to lead Canoga Park to a 7-5 West Valley League victory at El Camino Real. El Camino (8-5 in league) tied the score in the bottom of the seventh on Rob Bumgarner’s two-out grand slam. Mike Kerber had three hits, including a two-run homer, for Canoga Park (14-3).

Dave Lerma and Ron Conway each had three hits to lead Cleveland to a 7-3 win over Reseda in a West Valley League game.

Louis Porres had a double and a triple as Poly (17-3, 15-1) defeated Verdugo Hills, 6-2, and clinched the East Valley League championship. . . . Chavo Nunez had three doubles and drove in six runs to lead North Hollywood (9-9, 9-6) past Hollywood, 18-7, in an East Valley League game.

Freshman Keyaan Cook hit a home run for the third game in a row as Montclair Prep (19-4, 12-1) clinched its fifth straight Alpha league title with a 7-6 victory over Village Christian. . . . Paul Johnson and Greg Husmann each homered as L.A. Lutheran (6-12-1, 6-7) beat La Verne Lutheran, 3-2, in an Alpha League game.

Jeff Cirillo pitched and batted Providence (17-7-1, 7-2) to a 15-2 Delphic League win at Buckley. Cirillo (9-2) went the distance, allowing three hits and no earned runs while striking out 13.

Harvard scored six runs in the top of the seventh to pull out an 8-5, Santa Fe League win at Pater Noster (7-6 in league). . . . Rod Arancibia scattered five hits and stretched his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 30 as Bell-Jeff (10-13, 9-4) defeated Salesian, 13-0, in a Santa Fe League game. David Yasumi had three hits and five RBIs to pace Bell-Jeff.

Oakwood exploded for 10 runs in the second en route to a 16-7 victory over Southwestern to clinch the Liberty League title. . . . Highland Hall (13-5, 7-0) beat South Bay Lutheran, 21-3, in a Westside League game called after three innings.

Casey Burrill had a single and home run, but Hart lost to Schurr, 7-4, in a Foothill League game. Darrin Tsukashima had three hits for Hart (18-7, 10-4). Schurr clinched the league’s third playoff spot, eliminating Burbank.

Granada Hills (10-7, 8-5), behind a triple and home run by Saleem Batarse, defeated Birmingham, 8-5, in a Mid-Valley League game. . . . Jeff Ritter (2-5) pitched a four-hit shutout, striking out four, to lead Agoura (7-11, 4-8) to a 6-0, Frontier League win at Calabasas (5-7 in league).

Scott Bush (5-3) pitched six shutout innings to lead Rio Mesa (12-10-1, 6-7) to a 6-0 win at Santa Barbara in a Channel League game.

SOFTBALL

Senior Debby Day (13-3) struck out 13 and threw a two-hitter as Burbank beat Alhambra, 7-0, in a Foothill League game at Burbank (20-3, 7-2). . . . Kym Weil (14-6) allowed just an infield hit as Hart (18-6, 7-2) blanked San Gabriel, 10-0, in a Foothill League game.

Newbury Park scored seven runs in the seventh inning and went on to beat Royal, 10-9, in 10 innings in a Marmonte League game. Kathy Carroll singled home Chris Singer, who had three hits, with the winning run for Newbury Park (21-4, 12-0).

Susan Feele, Chrystal Babcock and Anne Middleton each homered as Moorpark (8-12, 5-9) defeated Bishop Diego, 15-5, in a Tri-Valley League game. . . . Wendy Wootton’s two-run single in the sixth made it close, but Oak Park (10-7, 6-7) dropped a 3-2, Tri-Valley League decision at Santa Ynez. . . . La Reina scored 15 runs in the second inning en route to a 19-7, Tri-Valley League win over Carpinteria (2-11 in league).

Maia Sharp’s triple in the bottom of the seventh inning drove in three runs to give North Hollywood a 9-7 victory over Marshall in an East Valley League game. Sharp (4-2) also relieved starter Samantha Tweddel in the fourth and picked up the victory. . . . Laura Fawcett (13-0) pitched a one-hitter and struck out 12 as Verdugo Hills defeated Poly, 22-0, in an East Valley League game. . . . Cathy Lewis (10-4) pitched a two-hitter and struck out 16 as Saugus (12-9, 10-4) defeated Quartz Hill, 8-0, in a Golden League game.
