Making his first start in more than a month, pitcher Sean Rees of Mission Bay High School threw a one-hitter at Clairemont Wednesday as the Buccaneers won, 5-0, to move into first place in the City Western League.

Rees (4-2), who has been sidelined with a shoulder injury, struck out 12 and walked four. The only hit was an infield single in the first inning.

“Our original plan was only to let him go four or five innings,” said Dennis Pugh, Mission Bay coach. “But he was throwing so effortlessly, we decided to let him stay in.”

Rees also tripled in a four-run fourth. Scot Vonderlieth and Colin Davis followed with triples. Tony Enomoto singled to drive in Davis.

Mission Bay (9-3, 16-6) and Clairemont (9-3, 12-9-1) are tied for first in the City Western League, but because Mission Bay won two of the three games played between the teams, the Buccaneers would win the championship if the teams finished the season tied.
