COACHING CHANGES Eleanor Dykstra, Valley Christian High School--The veteran coach has resigned and will not return to the private Cerritos school next season. She has coached softball, basketball and volleyball during her 17-year tenure and recorded 29 league titles. Currently she is co-coach of the softball team, which recently won the Olympic League championship and enters the CIF Southern Section playoffs today. She has a won-lost record of 203-42 in softball, and has guided 10 teams to league crowns and one Southern Section runner-up spot. In girls basketball, she posted a 316-65 won-lost record, including three Southern Section titles and three runner-up spots. She won 13 basketball league titles and was twice selected by The Times as Southeast Coach of the Year. This year, the Crusaders finished second in state CIF basketball competition. Dykstra also coached the school’s girls volleyball program for eight years and won six league championships. “It just seemed the right thing to do now,” Dykstra said of her resignation. She cited “family considerations” as a strong reason for her retirement, and said she has no plans to look for a college coaching job. Liz Metcalf, a physical education instructor from Chicago, has been hired as a replacement.

Larry Randall, Leffingwell Christian--The first-year baseball coach has been told that he will not be rehired next year. Randall guided the Lions to the Academy League title this season. He is the third coach the school has had in the past three years. Paul Kosareff was not rehired after last season and Mike Pilcher left in 1985 after he fell into disfavor with the administration.

Don Tayenaka, Whittier College--The water polo coach has resigned to become a fireman for the City of Long Beach. He had held the coaching position for six years.

CAL STATE LONG BEACH Schedules--The 49ers have announced schedules for the 1987-88 men’s and women’s basketball seasons. The men’s team will play only one game at the Long Beach Arena. That will be against the University of Nevada Las Vegas in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. contest Jan. 4, 1988. All other home games will be played in the university gymnasium, where the men open the season with three straight games. The 49ers also will meet USC Dec. 9 at the Los Angeles Sports Arena and play at Georgetown in preseason play. The women open the season Nov. 16 with an exhibition game against a Russian national team, then entertain UCLA on Dec. 3. The Lady 49ers also play at Texas (Dec. 18), Georgia (Jan. 20) and Old Dominion (Jan. 22).

Player Signing--The men’s basketball team announced the signing of Brian Jones, a 6-foot-4, 180-pound swingman from Fremont High School, who averaged 19.8 points and 9.6 rebounds a game.

SECOND TEAM, SECOND TIME George Lazalde, Golden West College--The sophomore outfielder was awarded a second-team All-South Coast Conference berth. It was his second consecutive appearance on the second team. He batted .346 in conference play.
